Social and Environmental Justice
in Transportation
As diversity and inclusion issues are becoming a major priority, in this research project we develop new methodologies to integrate equity considerations into transportation project evaluation. We are particularly interested in developing new tools and approaches to increase transportation benefits enjoyed by marginalized travelers and decrease the harms transportation systems disproportionately impose on disadvantaged communities. At the practical level, equity research can enable better analysis of the impact of various investments and policies on different population groups. Combined methods from various fields may also improve our understanding as to the difficulties and barriers certain groups have with respect to accessibility and environmental burdens. At the policy level, this research project can provide appropriate guidance to embed equity objectives into future transport and environmental policies, as well as decision-making processes. Thus, it may contribute to a more equitable planning. Furthermore, studying new forms of mobility dedicated to improving the lives of limited accessibility groups, disadvantaged communities and the well-being of environmentally sensitive groups, i.e. climate and environmental equity, is also constituting a key research direction.
